If you’re renovating your kitchen or replacing an electric cooktop with gas, you may be wondering: can I install a gas cooktop if there is currently no gas line to the kitchen?

The short answer is yes, in many cases.

However, installing a gas cooktop where there has never been a gas appliance before isn’t simply a matter of connecting the new cooktop. A suitable gas supply needs to be installed, and the work must be completed by a licensed gas fitter.

At Plumbing & Gas Services Pomona, we regularly help homeowners throughout Pomona, Noosa and the surrounding Sunshine Coast areas with gas appliance installations, replacements and servicing.

Can a gas line be installed if I don’t already have one?

Yes. If your kitchen doesn’t currently have a gas connection, a licensed gas fitter can assess the property and determine how a gas supply can be brought to the cooktop location.

The installation will depend on several factors, including:

  • Where your gas supply or LPG bottles are/will be located
  • The location/positioning of the cooktop (to achieve compliance)
  • Access beneath floors, through walls or under the house
  • The requirements of the particular cooktop
  • Existing gas pipework and its capacity

In some homes, installing the new gas line may be relatively straightforward. In others, particularly during renovations, additional work may be required to run the pipework to the kitchen.

What if I currently have an electric cooktop?

Replacing an electric cooktop with a gas model is possible, but you’ll need more than just a new appliance.

A gas supply needs to be installed to the appropriate location, and the cooktop must be correctly connected, tested and commissioned.

You’ll also need to consider the electrical side of the old cooktop. Depending on the existing installation and your new appliance, electrical work may be required to safely disconnect or modify the existing connection.

This is why it’s a good idea to involve the appropriate licensed trades before purchasing your new cooktop.

Do I need a gas fitter to install a gas cooktop?

Yes. Gas appliance installation is licensed work in Queensland.

A gas cooktop needs to be connected correctly, tested for leaks and checked to ensure it is operating safely and in accordance with the relevant requirements.

A professional installation isn’t just about making sure the cooktop turns on. Incorrect gas connections or pipework can create serious safety risks.

A licensed gas fitter can assess the existing gas system, install or modify pipework where required, connect the appliance and carry out the necessary testing and commissioning.

Should I Service or Replace My Gas Cooktop?

If your gas cooktop isn’t working as well as it used to, the next question is whether it needs a service or replacement.

In many cases, a cooktop that is dirty or not operating correctly can be serviced. But there are situations where replacement makes more sense.

When is it worth servicing a gas cooktop?

Servicing may be a good option when the cooktop is otherwise in reasonable condition and you’re experiencing issues such as:

  • Burners not lighting properly
  • Weak or uneven flames
  • Burners becoming blocked or dirty
  • Ignition problems
  • The appliance not operating as it normally does
  • Yellow or abnormal flames
  • General performance issues

Sometimes the problem may be relatively straightforward to identify and rectify.

However, don’t attempt to repair or modify gas components yourself. If you’re experiencing unusual flames, persistent ignition problems or any other gas-related issue, have the appliance inspected by a licensed gas fitter.

When is replacing a gas cooktop the better option?

Replacement may be the better choice when the appliance is older, damaged or becoming increasingly expensive to maintain.

Consider replacement if:

The cooktop is reaching the end of its life

Older appliances can become less reliable and may require increasingly frequent repairs. Typically, we would consider an appliance over 10 years as older.

If you’re regularly paying to fix the same appliance, replacing it may provide better value in the long term.

Parts are difficult to source

Some older cooktops have components that are no longer readily available.

If essential parts are unavailable or expensive, replacement can sometimes be more practical than trying to keep an ageing appliance operating.

The cooktop has significant damage

Cracked surfaces, damaged components or deterioration around burners can be a reason to consider replacing the appliance rather than continuing to repair it.

You are renovating the kitchen

A kitchen renovation can be the perfect opportunity to replace an older cooktop with a newer, more efficient and better-suited model.

If you’re changing from electric to gas, or relocating the cooktop, the gas supply can be planned as part of the renovation rather than added later.

Repairs are becoming uneconomical

There’s no universal age at which every gas cooktop should be replaced. The decision depends on the appliance’s condition, the cost of repairs and the availability of replacement parts.

If a repair is becoming a significant percentage of the cost of a new appliance, replacement may be worth considering.

What About a Gas Smell From the Cooktop?

A gas smell should never be ignored.

If you smell gas around your cooktop, turn off the gas supply if it is safe to do so, avoid ignition sources and arrange for the appliance and gas installation to be inspected by a licensed gas fitter.

Don’t assume that a gas smell is simply because the cooktop is old or needs a clean.

Gas leaks require prompt attention.
